Szalajka Valley

Guardian of the Carpathian Mountains monument Featured

The 2.65 m tall figure carved out of oak wood commemorates the alert military system that guarded the mountain passes of the Carpathian Mountains in the age of the Hungarian conquest of the homeland and which stands in the fabulous Szalajka Valley, next to the Zilahy Aladár Museum of Forestry. The original of the statue was inaugurated in 1915 in Cluj, but the Romanian troops conquering the city in 1918 burnt it. It was destroyed, therefore today we can only meet the accurate copy of it in the Szalajka Valley. The purpose of raising the monument made based on contemporary documents was to remind Hungarians living in the Carpathian basin of collaboration and of standing by our interests without compromises. It was made by Horváth Béres János sculptor and Tóth Vásárhelyi József architect. Every year (in September) a memorial ceremony is held at the Guardian of the Carpathian Mountains, which attracts more and more visitors to Szilvásvárad every year.
