History of the museum
The building of the Forestry Museum in the Szalajka Valley was built in the first years of the 19th century, then it was the office and apartment of the forest manager of Szilvásvárad, based on the forest management system organized after the first forest law. Lajos Király, the chief engineer of the Pallavicini estate, lived with his family in the building from 1928 to 1949. The building, also known as Wessely Castle, was declared a monument in 1980. In 1985, on the initiative of forester Aladár Zilahy, the house was transformed into a museum, which opened its doors to those interested in 1986. The exhibits arrived at the museum mainly as donations.

Museum presentation
Aladár Zilahy Forestry Museum has an almost unique collection of forestry and natural history in the country. Such a forestry museum is located in Hungary only in the city of Sopron and in the Szalajka Valley in the forests of Bükk.

In the museum, a permanent landscape history exhibition presents the plant associations and wildlife of Bükk, in addition, visitors can get acquainted with the daily work of foresters from the ancient times to the present day through the exhibited forestry tools. By illustrating various logging tools, the museum gives an idea of the past and present of forest management, the work and working conditions of the people working in the forest. Visitors to the museum can meet the life-size wild species found in the Bükk Mountains and gain insight into the world of game management. The museum presents the entire process of forest management, from seed production through seedling cultivation, silviculture, logging to the use of wood. Visitors will also receive information about the past and present of forest management, as well as get to know the work of forest people, their work tools and living conditions.

In memory of Lajos Király, a highly knowledgeable polyhistoric forest engineer and an old resident of the house, the museum was expanded in 2014 with a memorial room for Lajos Király, in which his personal belongings were exhibited.
