Bükk Plateau

The Bükk Plateau (or High Bükk) is the large, wavy plateau taking up the central region of the Bükk Region, which is Hungary’s largest and highest terrain of this type. A geographical mini landscape. The site is managed fully by the Bükk National Park. It is situated at the central, high part of the Bükk. It has an elongated shape, which starts on the west at the Bél Rock, then continues in the east-northeast direction until the imaginary line between Bükkszentkereszt and Hámor. Its southern border has quite a straight form and it stretches out to the north at the most at Bánkút. It is 18-20 km long and 5-7 km wide.

The complete plateau is a karst plateau, therefore the dominant stones here are limestone and dolomite. It is divided into two by the Garadna Stream, creating the larger, higher Great Plateau and the smaller, lower Small Plateau. On the edge of the plateau the famous “Bükk rocks” are standing in line: Istállós Rock, Tar Rock, Pes Rock, Bálvány, Bél Rock etc. It emerges from its surroundings suddenly from every side, but the high peaks make them invisible to see from the valley, from the plains.
