Visiting the Soldiers’ Graves

Heading downwards from the forest railway terminal, the Horotna Valley starts at the outdoor forest museum below the Veil Waterfall. Passing the museum we follow the yellow stripe tourist sign on the path leading slightly upwards. First we see the Horotna Lake and the Maria Mine. This provided partly the “ironstone” needs of the “massa”
in Szilvásvárad. After the mine we soon reach the Soldiers’ Graves on the saddle. The graves of two second world war German soldiers are here. The following, heartbreaking poem is written on the old headstones:
HUNGARIAN
IF YOU COME THIS WAY ON THIS BATTLEFIELD
DO NOT PLUCK FLOWER ANYWHERE AT THE MEADOW HERE
RATHER WATCH IT, CUDDLE IT
WITH RED BLOOD WRUNG TEARS WATER IT
HORST OSTERBURG

From the saddle we can go back to Szilvásvárad following the green + sign of the path steeply leading upwards then from the peak downwards, through the Bronze Age rampart ruin and the Bácsó Valley.
