Calvinist Round Church

The Calvinist Round Church of Szilvásvárad almost became the symbol of the municipality, which is assumed to be built in 1837-40, by the plans of Hild József. But this is contested even today. What is certain though, that the master builder was Povolnai Ferenc architect from Eger. The building was ordered by Count Keglevich Miklós, the landlord of the village. There are many legends surrounding the history of the church, but many confirm that the original building was demolished in 1832, because it was too dangerous.
The construction of the new church started in 1837, at the same site with the help of the landlord and lasted three years. The benches in the church was made by a local carpenter from thirty-three oak tree beams brought from the Bánfalvi forest. An interesting fact is, that Count Keglevich Miklós was catholic, and according to the rumbles he meant it to be a catholic church, but due to his dispute with Pyrker archbishop of Eger the temple under construction was donated to the Calvinist Church. He set one condition in exchange of his help, the following text had to be written on the facade of the building: “All servants of carved pictures shall be ashamed”. This is readable even today.
