Istállós Rock Featured

The Istállós Rock (hungarian Istállós-kő) is the second highest point of the Bükk region, with 958.1 meters it is the 6th highest mountain peak in Hungary. After the peaks in the Mátra, it is the second highest after the Szilvási Rock. It is located on the southwestern edge of the Bükk Plateau. A few hundred meters of footbridge with easy access, accessible from Szilvásvárad, leads up to the Istállós Rock Cave on its side. Before 2014 it was considered the highest point in the Bükk region, but measurements made since then have revealed that the Szilvási Rock  is 960,715 meters high.

From the Gloriett Glade, they can embark on a mountainside that requires more power. Be careful, however, that you are only allowed to drive on the marked road without a special permit, because you are driving in a highly protected area. From the end of the railway, at the southern end of the meadow, going up the dam, the view of the Upper Lake unfolds before us. On the left (east) side of the lake, we reach the Szalajka Spring. The cave behind the spring is currently only 150 meters long, although correlation studies have shown that water from the Bükk Plateau travels several kilometers in caverns never seen before by a man before reaching the spring. Unfortunately, research in the source system had already claimed fatalities in 1979. Above the outflow of water we can see the plaque.
The serpentine road with a barrier, marked after the spring, marked with a green cave sign, leads to the Istállós Rock Prehistoric Cave. If someone is more deeply interested in the history of the cave, it is worth studying the literature about it before the visit, or you should hire a tour guide.
From the cave on the green Δ sign you can reach the top of. Until recently, at an altitude of 959 m above sea level, this peak was considered to be the highest peak in Bükk, but the latest measurements, on the new 10,000-scale map, show the southern peak of Double Rock at 961 m. We can continue our journey from the summit in several directions. The most beautiful sights of the plateau accessible from here are the Cabbage Garden, the Tar Rock, the Virgin Forest and the Cserepes Rock, which is furnished as a cave accommodation.
