Virgin forest

The virgin forest is located about 900 m above sea level between Tar Rock and Virágos Mud. The first 25 hectares were taken out of farming around the beginning of the 19th century and then, on the proposal of Lajos Király forestry engineer, Count Pallavicini permanently removed the entire present area from production and made it available for scientific research. Since then man has not directly interfered with its development: the 45-50 meter high and 180-200 years old beech giants "die standing up." Next to its western edge is the location of the former small railway

In 2000 the forest was declared a forest reserve of the Bükk National Park. The area of the Virgin Forest Reserve is 375.3 hectares, of which the core area is 59.7 hectares.
